3D Printers and Additive Manufacturing Machinery: Functional Safety Risk Assessment
Additive manufacturing poses new challenges and considerations. In the U.S., while there are risk assessment standards, there is no requirement to perform a risk assessment. This paper will focus on risk assessment strategies and how manufacturers can prove that risks are reduced to an acceptable level.

The paper will also review the following manufacturing techniques: SLA (Stereo Lithography), DLP (Digital Light Processing), FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling), SLS (Selective Laser Sintering), DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), SLM (Selective Laser Melting), EBM (Electronic Beam Melting) and DED (Direct Energy Deposition).

Key Considerations:

  • Environmental effects
  • Normal use and predictable misuses
  • Pre- and post- evaluation
  • Life stages (transport, storage, installation, setup, operation, maintenance or service, disassembly and disposal)
