TÜV Rheinland Italia presents its new EMC chamber

TÜV Rheinland Italia, as part of its policy of strengthening of its test laboratories, last July started work on the construction of an additional semi-anechoic chamber at the technological center of Pogliano Milanese (MI).
The new semi-anechoic chamber will be equipped with a very high level equipment that will allow to carry out countless tests.

Here are some technical features:

  • Dimensions: external screen 14.5 x 9.4 x 6.1 m
  • Turntable: 5 m diameter, vehicle ready up to 5 tons
  • Internal free diagonal distance: 15.5 m
  • Sliding door: net dimensions 3.000 x 3.000 mm flush with the external / internal floor
  • Frequency range: 9 kHz to 40 GHz
  • Emission test (EMI): full compliance according to CISPR 16-1-4 and ANSI C63.4
  • Full compliance according to CISPR 12 and CISPR 25
  • Immunity test (EMS): full compliance according to IEC / EN 61000-4-3 (200 V / m 200 MHz - 6 GHz)
  • Full compliance according to ISO 11451 and ISO 11452

Why are we building a second EMC chamber?

"The new chamber will make it possible to increase the types of tests performed, develop new market sectors in line with the most modern technology and significantly reduce service delivery times", explains Emanuele Ferrari, Business Stream Coordinator for the Product sector, "The instrumental set-up will also allow to meet the requirements of the Automotive test specifications thanks to the possibility of generating fields up to 200V / m and specific disturbances for the mobility world, as well as guaranteeing full coverage of tests required for all products, including the wireless sector".
The size of the chamber and the rotary table will allow to carry out tests on products of considerable size such as complete vehicles or electronic assemblies formed by different cabinets and control / actuation equipment.
The availability of high power supplies will also make it possible to manage equipment with absorption of the order of hundreds of amperes necessary, for example, for checks in the electric drive and renewable energy chain (eg. inverters, storage systems).
"All this also provides for a greater investment in terms of specialized personnel", continues Massimo Bianchi, Local Field Manager for the Mobility sector, "and, as regards the sector dedicated to mobility, it will allow testing not only components, but also complete products, such as complete vehicles".

The works began in August with the civil works: the excavation to house the already generous 5 m rotating table was oversized in view of a future 7 m table equipped with a moving vehicle simulation system.
The installation work began in mid-September and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
"The new semi-anechoic chamber joins the current one in operation and which already works on three shifts", concludes Paolo Caglio, CEO, "effectively expanding the range of testable products and reducing waiting times: we of TUV Rheinland we are confident that this important investment will allow us to offer an even better service to satisfy all the requests of our customers, thus further strengthening our leadership in the Italian and European market”.
