Unannounced audits are not a new concept, and they were already mandated as an option in previous GFSI benchmarking requirements. With the release of version 2020.1, this requirement evolved and became mandatory at regular intervals. As a result, certification program owners have updated their programs to ensure compliance. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic, full implementation of this requirement was temporarily halted; however, the lifting of restrictions has put this requirement back on the agenda of certified organizations and certification bodies.
