Black Sea: Midia Gas Development Project

Large-scale gas production project accompanied by TÜV Rheinland Romania / Extended framework contract and new order / Wide range of services including Quality Assurance and Quality Control

Since signing a framework contract as second party body for the Midia Gas Development (MGD) project in March 2020, TÜV Rheinland Romania has provided a wide range of services for Black Sea Oil & Gas S.A. (BSOG). The contract was extended by further purchase orders regarding specific services. Amongst others, the scope of work included QA/QC services to 110 vendors in 25 countries worldwide, site supervision and on-site monitoring services during commissioning and the pre start-up phase.

“To date, we have provided 1,800 inspection man-days, issued 1,600 reports and have had 150 inspectors involved, to name just a few facts and figures”, says Valentin Marin, Local Stream Manager of Industrial Services & Cybersecurity Romania. Thus, it is not surprising that the total revenue so far has amounted to 950,000 euro.

New 2-Year Order by Client Received

At the end of May, TÜV Rheinland Romania was awarded as third party inspection body to perform the on-site verifications and to provide conclusions regarding the Safety Readiness for the first gas-in in the gas treatment plant (GTP) of the MGD project. “Based on our Letter of Confirmation for Safety Readiness, the first gas coming from the offshore platform came into the GTP on June 11th”, reports Valentin Marin. “Then on June 15th, first gas was delivered to the National Transmission System.” With the framework agreement coming to its end in June 2022 and following these successful steps, TÜV Rheinland Romania received a new purchase order on the first of July valid until June 2024, including all the services delivered and provided for so far.

“This is an important client and project for us, not only in numbers but also in regard to furthering sustainable and newly developed energy sources”, says Sergey Amirkhanov, Regional Stream Manager BS I Central and Eastern Europe. “Especially keeping in mind that gas was categorized as ‘green energy’ by the EU parliament just recently.”

About the MGD Project and Black Sea Oil & Gas

The Midia Gas Development project is the first new offshore gas development in Romania in over 30 years and the only project under development today. It consists of 5 offshore production wells, one unmanned production platform located on Ana field, a 126 km gas pipeline linking the Ana platform to the shore and to a new onshore gas treatment plant.
“A number of firsts were achieved in Romania, all during a global pandemic and, more recently, conflict in Ukraine that threatened to impact Black Sea operations. The result of all these efforts is that MGD Project provides not only 10% of Romania’s gas demand, but the path, and possibly even the infrastructure, for other developers in the Black Sea, as well as to launch a number of green energy development initiatives, making MGD an integrated energy transition infrastructure”, commented Mark Beacom, BSOG’s CEO.

BSOG is a Romanian-based independent energy company, targeting offshore development of gas resources and owned by Carlyle International Energy Partners and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
