Quality and safety are essential for packaging, household appliances and other products that come into contact with food. This means that food contact materials must be tested for NIAS (Non-Intentionally Added Substances). These substances can be created through chemical processes during production, for example. They can also enter products unintentionally through contamination.

Testing and subsequent risk assessment can prevent health risks for consumers and economic damage for companies. Worldwide, there is a growing number of regulations that define the requirements for food contact materials. These differ depending on the country and are updated continuously. Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, for example, requires an assessment of the health risk caused by NIAS. If European or national monitoring authorities detect increased concentrations of NIAS that pose a health risk, sanctions may be imposed.
